Overview
Founded in 315 BC and named after the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki has been northern Greece's great port ever since. Roman arches, UNESCO listed Byzantine churches and Ottoman landmarks stand between busy markets and a seafront promenade that fills every evening. Greeks call it the country's food capital, and from here, Halkidiki's beaches, Mount Olympus, Meteora and the road south all lie within easy reach.

Layers of Empires
The Arch and Rotunda of Galerius, Byzantine churches on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the White Tower on the bay and the lanes of the old Ano Poli above it all. Few cities let you walk through so much history in one afternoon.
The Food Capital of Greece
Greeks themselves crown Thessaloniki their best eating city: the Modiano and Kapani markets, bougatsa at dawn, long meze lunches and a seafront of bars and tavernas that never quite empties.
The Starting Point of the Mainland
From here the whole of Greece opens southward: Halkidiki's beaches an hour away, Mount Olympus and Meteora beyond, then Athens and the Peloponnese. Thessaloniki is where the great mainland journey begins.
Thessaloniki wears its two thousand years lightly. Down on the bay, the White Tower watches over a promenade where the whole city walks at sunset; a few streets back, the Arch of Galerius and the vast brick Rotunda stand where Roman emperors built them; and climbing the hill, the old quarter of Ano Poli keeps its Ottoman houses and its views over the gulf. Byzantine churches, fifteen of them on the UNESCO list, are folded in between, still scented with candle wax.
Then there is the table, which is where Thessaloniki truly rules. This has always been a crossroads city, and its kitchen carries the memory of it, from the great Sephardic community that once thrived here to the flavours of Asia Minor. Start with warm bougatsa at first light, wander the stalls of the Modiano and Kapani markets, settle into a meze lunch in Ladadika's painted lanes and finish among the bars where Greece's largest student population keeps the city young. Ask a Greek where to eat best in the country, and this is the answer you will hear.
The city also earns its title as the gateway of the north. Within an hour or so, you can be swimming off the pine fringed coves of Halkidiki, and within two, standing beneath Mount Olympus or tasting wine in the vineyards of Naoussa. Vergina, the royal tombs of the Macedonian kings, waits on the plain to the west; the monasteries of Meteora rise a comfortable drive to the southwest.
That is exactly how we suggest using it. With our local team, Thessaloniki becomes the first chapter of the great mainland journey: two or three days for the city and its table, then the road south through Meteora to Athens and on into the Peloponnese, every stage arranged, every hotel and guide in place. You land in the north, and the whole of Greece unfolds ahead of you.

Good To Know
Food
Come hungry. Thessaloniki's classics run from bougatsa and koulouri at breakfast to soutzoukakia, mussels from the gulf and trigona sweets from Panorama, with the Modiano and Kapani markets at the heart of it all. A guided food walk on your first morning is the fastest way into the city, and reservations along the seafront are worth having at sunset; we arrange both.
Weather & Getting Around
Spring through autumn is ideal, with warm evenings made for the promenade; winters are cooler than the islands but the city stays lively year round. Thessaloniki's international airport connects directly with much of Europe, making it the natural landing point for northern Greece. The centre is best on foot, and from here a private car reaches Halkidiki in about an hour, Vergina and Mount Olympus in under two and Meteora in around three, which is exactly why our mainland journeys begin in this city.
