Overview
Drop a coin at the centre of the stage at Epidaurus and the highest of its fourteen thousand seats hears it fall. Built in the fourth century BC and preserved almost intact, this is the theatre by which all others are measured, set within the sanctuary of Asclepius, where the ancient world came to be healed. On summer nights, it still fills for performances under the stars.

Acoustics Without Equal
The theatre's geometry carries an unamplified voice, even a whisper or a struck match, to every one of its fifty-five rows. Every visitor tests it from the centre stone, and every visitor comes away amazed.
The Sanctuary of Asclepius
Around the theatre spreads the great healing sanctuary of the ancient world, with its temple, its mysterious round tholos and the dormitories where patients slept awaiting the god's cure in their dreams.
Theatre Under the Stars
Each July and August, the Athens Epidaurus Festival stages ancient drama in the theatre itself. Watching Sophocles by night, from stone seats cut twenty-four centuries ago, is among the most powerful experiences Greece offers.
Epidaurus began not as a theatre but as a hospital. Pilgrims travelled from across the Mediterranean to the sanctuary of Asclepius, god of medicine, to bathe, rest, follow prescribed diets and sleep in sacred halls where the cure was said to arrive in dreams. Theatre was part of the therapy, and so the sanctuary built the finest one the world had seen.
The theatre is the reason to come, and it does not disappoint. Its fifty-five tiers of limestone curve into the pine covered hillside in proportions so exact that sound needs no help at all: stand at the circular stone in the centre of the orchestra, speak normally, and friends in the top row hear every word. Architects and engineers still study how it was done.
Give the rest of the sanctuary its due as well. The museum and the excavations trace a complex of temples, baths, a stadium and the enigmatic tholos, whose underground labyrinth may have housed the sacred serpents of the god. It is a quieter, greener site than most, and wandering it fills in the story the theatre begins.
With our local team, Epidaurus slots perfectly into the Argolid: Mycenae in the morning, the theatre in the golden afternoon and dinner in Nafplio by evening. And if your dates fall in festival season, we arrange tickets and transfers for a night of ancient drama in the theatre itself, an evening guests talk about for years.

Good To Know
Food
The hills around Epidaurus grow some of Greece's best oranges and olives, and the seaside village of Palaia Epidavros serves fish tavern lunches by the water. On festival nights, tavernas near the theatre fill with a happy pre show crowd; otherwise most visitors dine in Nafplio, forty minutes away and worth every one of them.
Weather & Getting Around
Spring and autumn are ideal for the site, and July and August, despite the heat, bring the festival, with performances starting at dusk when the air cools. Epidaurus is about two hours from Athens and pairs naturally with Mycenae, the Corinth Canal and Nafplio. The theatre involves climbing steep ancient steps for the full effect, so take them steadily and enjoy the view from the top.
