Overview
In a green valley of the western Peloponnese, where two rivers meet beneath wooded hills, the ancient world held its greatest festival. For over a thousand years, wars paused so athletes could compete here in honour of Zeus. Today the sanctuary lies in pine shade, its stadium intact, its museum home to some of the finest sculpture that survives from antiquity.

The Sanctuary of Zeus
Walk the Altis, the sacred grove, past the great Temple of Zeus that once housed a wonder of the ancient world, the older Temple of Hera and the workshop where Pheidias made his gold and ivory god.
The Original Stadium
Through the stone arch of the athletes' entrance lies the stadium itself, its starting line still set in the earth. Most visitors cannot resist a run down the original track, and they are right not to.
A World Class Museum
The Archaeological Museum holds the Hermes of Praxiteles, the sculptures of the Temple of Zeus and the Nike of Paionios, masterpieces displayed a short walk from where they were found.
Olympia feels different from the other great sites of Greece. There is no dramatic cliff or city skyline, just a quiet green valley where the Kladeos meets the Alpheios, pines shading fallen columns. That gentleness is the point: for centuries, the Olympic truce meant that even enemies laid down arms to gather here in peace, every four years, without fail.
The sanctuary rewards a slow, guided walk. The column drums of the Temple of Zeus lie where an earthquake left them, each one taller than a person, giving a real sense of the scale of the temple that held the statue counted among the seven wonders. Nearby stand the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame is still kindled for every modern Games, the gymnasium, the baths and the ruins of the workshop of Pheidias.
Then comes the moment everyone remembers: passing through the vaulted entrance tunnel into the stadium, exactly as the athletes did, and seeing the track open out with its marble starting blocks in place. Children race it, adults pace it and the connection across nearly three thousand years is suddenly very simple.
With our local team, Olympia takes its proper place in a Peloponnese journey: a private guide who brings the Games to life, the museum timed for its quiet hours and, around the visit, the region's pleasures, a family wine estate, a village lunch, the road onward to Mycenae, Nafplio or the coast. You arrive, and the story is ready for you.

Good To Know
Food
The western Peloponnese is olive oil and wine country, and the tables around Olympia show it: slow cooked meats, garden vegetables, local cheeses and oil pressed within sight of the groves. Several family wine estates near the site welcome visitors for tastings, an easy and rewarding addition to the day.
Weather & Getting Around
Spring and autumn are ideal, green and mild; summer visits are best in the early morning, as the valley holds the heat. Olympia is around three and a half hours from Athens by road and pairs naturally with Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio on a Peloponnese circuit, which is exactly how our classic mainland itineraries run it. The site is flat and shaded, comfortable for all ages.
