Overview
One of the oldest cities on earth, and one of the most alive. The Parthenon crowns the skyline as it has for twenty-five centuries, while at its feet, Plaka and Anafiotika keep the feel of an island village and Psyrri hums with tavernas and workshops. Athens is not a stopover; given two good days, it becomes many travellers' favourite chapter of Greece.

The Acropolis
The Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the sacred rock itself, best visited early or at golden hour with a private guide who turns marble into stories. The Acropolis Museum below completes the picture.
Plaka and Anafiotika
The old quarter winds beneath the Acropolis in pedestrian lanes of neoclassical houses, and inside it hides Anafiotika, a tiny whitewashed village built by island masons, a piece of the Cyclades in the middle of the city.
A City That Eats and Lives Late
From the Varvakios market to Psyrri's tavernas and rooftop bars facing the lit Parthenon, Athens rewards appetite. Food walks, wine tastings and long dinners are as essential here as any ruin.
Athens carries its history lightly. The Parthenon floats above the rooftops from almost every corner of the centre, yet the city beneath it is busy with the present: markets in full voice, galleries in old warehouses, coffee taken seriously and dinner starting late. Democracy, theatre and philosophy were born on these streets, and the streets have kept talking ever since.
The ancient city deserves unhurried time. Beyond the Acropolis itself lie the Ancient Agora where Socrates argued, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis Museum, where the sculptures are displayed in daylight with the Parthenon visible through the glass. With a private guide and the right timing, you walk these sites in relative calm while the crowds are elsewhere.
Then let the modern city take over. Climb Philopappos Hill or Lycabettus for the view, browse the artisans of Monastiraki, taste your way through olive oil, honey and wine in a hidden courtyard and finish on a rooftop in Plaka as the Acropolis lights come on. Few cities anywhere offer an evening like it.
With our local team, Athens fits your journey exactly: a hotel in the right quarter, guides who bring the stones to life, tables booked where Athenians actually eat and seamless connections onward to the islands or the classical mainland. You arrive, and the city opens up.

Good To Know
Food
Athens is one of Europe's great eating cities, from souvlaki stands and the Varvakios market to courtyard tavernas in Psyrri and Michelin starred dining rooms. A guided food walk through the centre, tasting cheese, olives, honey and street pies, is the fastest way to understand the city, and dinner on a rooftop facing the lit Acropolis is the way to end it.
Weather & Getting Around
Spring and autumn are ideal, warm and clear without the July and August heat, and even winter is mild with the sites blissfully quiet. The historic centre is compact and best on foot, with the metro and private drivers covering everything else. Athens is also the natural hinge of any Greek journey, connecting flights and ferries to every island, so most itineraries pass through at least once; give it the two days it deserves.
