Overview

The largest island in the Cyclades and by far the most generous. Its west coast runs in one long ribbon of golden sand, its mountains hide marble villages and Byzantine chapels and its farms feed the whole island, from famous potatoes to cheese and citrus liqueur. At the harbour, the great marble doorway of the Portara has framed the sunset for two and a half thousand years.

Naxos coastline and golden beaches
  • The Portara

The massive marble gate of an unfinished temple to Apollo stands alone on its islet by the harbour. At sunset, when the sky burns behind it, the whole town seems to pause and watch.

  • Beaches That Go On Forever

Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka form one of the longest stretches of golden sand in Greece, shading from lively to completely empty the further you walk.

  • Villages in the Mountains

Halki's neoclassical lanes, Apeiranthos built entirely of marble, Filoti under the shadow of Mount Zas. Inland Naxos is a different island, and every bit as beautiful.

Naxos is the island Greeks themselves choose for summer, and it is easy to see why. It is big enough to hold everything: serious beaches, a living mountain interior, Venetian history in the old town and food that comes almost entirely from its own soil. Where smaller islands offer a mood, Naxos offers a whole world.

The west coast is the headline. From Agios Prokopios through Agia Anna to Plaka and beyond, golden sand runs for kilometre after kilometre, with beach bars and watersports at one end and nothing but dunes and cedar trees at the other. Families settle in for whole days here, and the shallow, clear water does the entertaining.

Inland is where Naxos surprises. The Tragea valley is a sea of olive groves dotted with Byzantine chapels, Halki pours its own citron liqueur in a century old distillery and Apeiranthos gleams, a village built of marble on the slopes of Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. Lunch in a village square here, with local cheese and wine, is as memorable as any beach.

With our local team, Naxos fits together beautifully: a stay near the sands that suit your group, a driver and guide for a day among the mountain villages, the right taverna in Halki and the Portara at sunset without the guesswork. You arrive, and the island's generosity does the rest.

Good To Know

Food

Naxos feeds itself, which is rare in the islands. Its potatoes are famous across Greece, its graviera cheese wins national prizes and its citron liqueur, kitron, is made nowhere else. Tavernas serve meat and vegetables from farms a few fields away, so eating well here is simply the default.

Weather & Getting Around

May, June and September are ideal, with warm seas and quiet villages; July and August are lively but the long beaches absorb the crowds with ease. There is a small airport with flights from Athens and frequent ferries from Piraeus and the neighbouring islands. Distances are real on Naxos, so a car or private driver is the key to enjoying both coast and mountains.
