Overview
Three thousand years before the Parthenon, Mycenae ruled the Aegean from a fortress between two barren peaks. This is the city of Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks at Troy, and the heart of the civilisation that gave Homer his heroes. Its Lion Gate, colossal walls and golden burials still stand, older than almost anything else you will see in Greece.

The Lion Gate
Two stone lionesses have guarded the citadel's entrance for thirty-two centuries, the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe still standing where its makers placed it. Walking beneath them is a genuine step into legend.
The Treasury of Atreus
The greatest of the beehive tombs is a vast domed chamber built without mortar, its entrance lintel weighing over a hundred tonnes. Inside, the silence and the engineering are equally staggering.
Walls Built by Giants
Later Greeks could not believe men had raised these ramparts and credited the Cyclopes. From the palace ruins at the top, the view sweeps over the Argolid plain to the sea, exactly as a king would have wanted it.
Mycenae is where Greek history and Greek myth refuse to separate. Homer called it rich in gold, and when the citadel's grave circles were opened, out came golden masks, cups and blades, treasure from the age of the Trojan War. Whether or not one of those faces belonged to Agamemnon himself, the power that built this fortress was very real.
The approach still works as its builders intended. The road climbs to walls of stones so large that later Greeks credited giants, and then the Lion Gate appears, its carved guardians framing the way in. Inside, ramps lead past Grave Circle A, where the golden burials lay, up through the ruins of houses and storerooms to the palace on the summit, with the whole Argolid spread out below.
A short walk from the citadel waits the Treasury of Atreus, the finest of the great beehive tombs. Its long stone approach funnels you toward a doorway taller than a house, and the domed chamber inside remained the largest of its kind in the world for over a thousand years. The site museum gathers finds from the excavations and sets the story straight from myth to archaeology.
With our local team, Mycenae joins the classic Argolid circle: Epidaurus and its theatre nearby, the Corinth Canal on the road from Athens and elegant seaside Nafplio, the perfect base, a half hour away. A private guide makes all the difference here, turning stones into the saga of the house of Atreus as you walk.

Good To Know
Food
The Argolid is orange grove country, and its tables are generous: citrus, olive oil, grilled lamb and hearty village cooking in the tavernas below the site. Most travellers save their appetite for Nafplio, half an hour away, where seafront dining and some of the best gelato in Greece round off the day.
Weather & Getting Around
Spring and autumn are perfect; the citadel hill is exposed, so in summer go early in the morning and bring water and a hat. Mycenae is about two hours from Athens and combines naturally with the Corinth Canal, Epidaurus and Nafplio in one classic day or, better, an overnight. The climb to the palace is steady rather than steep, but good shoes matter on the ancient stones.
