Overview

Towers of grey rock rise hundreds of metres from the plain of Thessaly, and on their summits sit monasteries that monks began building six centuries ago, hauling every stone up by rope and basket. Six are still alive with prayer today. Meteora, the name means suspended in the air, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe.

Meteora rock towers and monasteries
  • Six Living Monasteries

Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, St Nicholas, St Stephen and Holy Trinity still crown the rocks, their chapels rich with Byzantine frescoes and their balconies hanging over empty air.

  • A Landscape Like No Other

The rock towers themselves, shaped over millions of years, would be worth the journey alone. Roads and footpaths wind among them, opening one impossible view after another.

  • Sunset Over the Rocks

As the light lowers, the pillars turn amber and the plain fills with shadow. Watching it from the right ledge, with the monasteries lit gold, is the image of Meteora you take home.

Nothing quite prepares you for the first sight of Meteora. The rocks appear over the rooftops of Kalambaka like something imagined, vast smooth towers with buildings improbably on top. Hermits climbed into these cliffs a thousand years ago; by the fourteenth century, monks were building full monasteries on the summits, safe above a troubled world.

Visiting the monasteries is a journey in itself. Steps carved into the rock replace the old rope ladders and nets, and inside wait candlelit chapels, frescoes of startling colour and small museums of manuscripts and icons. Each of the six has its own character, from the grandeur of Great Meteoron to little Roussanou wrapped around its pinnacle, and a good guide knows which to visit when, as opening days rotate through the week.

The land between the rocks deserves time too. Old monopati footpaths climb from Kastraki village through oak woods to hidden hermitages and viewpoints the coaches never reach, and at day's end everyone gathers on the western ledges for a sunset that silences conversation. Photographers, hikers and pilgrims all get their Meteora here.

With our local team, the visit runs seamlessly: a private guide who knows the monasteries' rhythms, a hotel in Kalambaka with the rocks outside your window and the drive from Athens or Delphi arranged door to door. Paired with Delphi, Meteora makes a two or three day mainland journey that many guests call the highlight of their whole time in Greece.

Good To Know

Food

Thessaly is farming country and the table shows it: grilled meats, wild greens, local trahana and spentzofai, a hearty sausage and pepper stew from the nearby Pelion villages. Kalambaka and Kastraki have honest family tavernas where dinner under the dark shapes of the rocks ends the day perfectly.

Weather & Getting Around

Spring and autumn are ideal, clear and cool for climbing the monastery steps; summer works with early starts, and winter mist and snow make the rocks unforgettable for photographers. Meteora is about four hours from Athens by road or direct train to Kalambaka. Dress modestly for the monasteries: shoulders covered, and wraps or long skirts for women, which are also lent at the doors. Each monastery closes one day a week, so the route needs planning; we handle that.
