Overview
Crete is less an island than a small country that happens to be surrounded by sea. Venetian harbours curl around fishing boats in Chania and Rethymno, the White Mountains rise snow capped behind olive groves, palm trees shade the beach at Vai and Europe's oldest civilisation left its palace at Knossos. Greeks from everywhere else admit it quietly: the food here is the best in the country.

Pick a Side, Not the Whole Island
Crete runs 260 kilometres end to end, and the honest advice is not to attempt it all. Base yourself west for Chania, the lagoons and the gorges, or east for Elounda, Knossos and the quiet coast, and save the other half for the return trip.
The Best Table in Greece
Ask any Greek where the country eats best and Crete is the answer: mountain lamb, dakos with tomatoes and mizithra, snails in rosemary, honey over fresh cheese and a glass of raki that arrives whether you ordered it or not.
Landscapes That Do Not Belong Together
Pink sand at Elafonisi, the turquoise lagoon of Balos, the Samaria Gorge dropping sixteen kilometres through the mountains to the Libyan Sea. No other Greek island packs this much world into one shoreline.
The first thing to understand about Crete is its scale. This is the largest island in Greece by far, with three mountain ranges, four hundred gorges and a coastline that would take weeks to know. Treat it like Santorini, a base and a scooter, and it will exhaust you; treat it like a country, one region at a time, and it opens beautifully. Most first visits are happiest anchored in the west, around Chania, with the east kept as the reason to come back.
The west is Crete at its most photogenic. Chania's Venetian harbour is the loveliest urban waterfront in Greece, a curve of pastel townhouses and an Egyptian lighthouse best seen from a taverna table at dusk. From here the day trips write themselves: the pink tinted sand and shallow lagoon of Elafonisi, the impossible turquoise sweep of Balos, and for the walkers, the Samaria Gorge, a full day descending through the White Mountains to a boat pickup on the Libyan Sea. Down on that south coast, roadless villages like Loutro live at the speed of the ferries that serve them.
The east tells the older story. At Knossos, just outside Heraklion, the Minoans built Europe's first great civilisation four thousand years ago, and the palace with its dolphin frescoes still stands to walk through. Beyond it the coast grows calm and blue around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, where boats cross to the haunting island fortress of Spinalonga, and at the island's far tip a palm forest shades the beach at Vai. Everywhere between, the interior keeps its own life: hill villages where the kafenion is the parliament, olive groves that count their age in centuries and shepherds' roads that reward anyone who takes the slow way.
With our local team, Crete arranges itself around you rather than the other way round. We pick the right base for your side of the island, set up the boat to Balos before the crowds arrive, book the table in the harbour as the lighthouse comes on and send you into the hills with the villages worth the detour already marked. You choose the pace; Crete has room for every one of them.

Good To Know
Food
Come with an appetite and surrender to it. Crete grows and raises nearly everything it serves: olive oil pressed in the village, mountain greens called horta, lamb cooked antikristo over open fire, dakos, fresh mizithra with honey and the raki that closes every meal on the house. The best cooking hides in hill village tavernas rather than harbour fronts, and a table booked where the locals eat is worth more than any museum ticket; we keep a list and we share it gladly.
Weather & Getting Around
Crete has the longest season in Greece: swimming from April into November, spring hillsides in flower and mountain snow on the horizon until May. Two international airports, Chania for the west and Heraklion for the centre and east, mean you can fly into one side and out of the other, which is exactly how we plan it. A car is essential beyond the towns, distances are honest, the north coast highway is quick, and the mountain roads are slow in the best possible way.
Why Choose GreeceVisits

An Island Planned Like a Country
Crete rewards a route, not a checklist. We build your trip region by region, west or east or both, with the drives kept human and the days kept unhurried, so the island's size becomes the pleasure instead of the problem.
Local Knowledge, Real Access
We live and work in Greece. That means the boat to Balos before the crowds, the hill taverna the guidebooks miss, the quiet entrance hours at Knossos and stays that put the harbour or the mountains at your door.
Twenty-Five Years of Trust
GreeceVisits is built on more than 25 years of experience as Italy Vacation Specialists. The relationships we have built across the Mediterranean are what let us open doors that stay closed to most visitors.
Shaped Around You
No two journeys are the same. We work closely with you to build a trip that fits your pace, your group and the kind of Greece you came to find.
