Overview
For a thousand years, kings and cities sent their questions here, to the Oracle of Apollo on the flank of Mount Parnassus. The sanctuary they built climbs the mountainside in terraces of temples, treasuries and a theatre with the valley of olives falling away below to the sea. The ancients called Delphi the navel of the world; standing there, you understand why.

The Sanctuary of Apollo
The Sacred Way winds up past treasuries and monuments to the great Temple of Apollo, where the Pythia delivered her prophecies, and on to a theatre and stadium carved into the mountain itself.
A Museum of Masterpieces
The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the bronze Charioteer, one of the finest surviving sculptures of antiquity, alongside the treasures cities dedicated to the god over centuries.
Parnassus and Arachova
The setting is half the experience: eagles over the cliffs, the endless olive grove of Amfissa below and the stone village of Arachova ten minutes away for lunch with a view.
Delphi is the classical site that moves people most, and it is largely because of where it stands. The ancients did not choose this mountainside by accident: the cliffs of Parnassus rise behind the temples, the Pleistos valley drops away in a sea of olive trees and the light changes by the hour. Even travellers who think they are done with ruins fall quiet here.
The sanctuary rewards a slow climb. The Sacred Way passes the Athenian Treasury and the great retaining wall covered in inscriptions, reaches the columns of the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle spoke, and continues up to the theatre and finally the stadium, high above everything. With a good guide, the stones give up their stories: the riddling prophecies, the political games, the athletes of the Pythian Games.
Save unhurried time for the museum. The bronze Charioteer alone justifies the journey, his glass eyes still calm after twenty-five centuries, and around him stand the Sphinx of Naxos, the twins of Argos and gold and ivory offerings that survived the sanctuary's fall. Below the main site, the round temple of Athena Pronaia makes the classic Delphi photograph.
With our local team, Delphi becomes a highlight rather than a rushed stop: a private guide and driver from Athens, timing that beats the tour groups, lunch in stone built Arachova and, if you wish, an overnight so you can see the sanctuary in the quiet of early morning. Many travellers pair it with Meteora on a two or three day mainland journey we arrange end to end.

Good To Know
Food
The mountains feed this region well: grilled meats, formaela cheese from Arachova seared at the table, hearty bean soups and honey from Parnassus. Delphi town and Arachova both have tavernas with terraces over the olive valley, and lunch with that view is part of the visit.
Weather & Getting Around
Delphi sits at altitude, so spring and autumn are ideal and summer mornings are far more comfortable than afternoons; winter brings snow to Parnassus and a quiet, atmospheric site. It is about two and a half hours from Athens by road, comfortable as a private day trip, though an overnight lets you walk the sanctuary before the coaches arrive. Wear good shoes: the Sacred Way is a real climb.
