Overview

The southernmost and most distinctive of the Sporades, set far enough apart to keep its own way of life intact. Its hilltop town is a maze of white cube houses, and its workshops still turn out hand-carved furniture and ceramics, while the island's small wild horses roam the south. Come for the traditional craft, the local character and the quiet beaches that mass tourism has simply never found.

Skyros Old Town and coastline
  • A Way of Life Preserved

Set apart from the other Sporades, Skyros has held onto its own traditions, architecture and rhythm. The hilltop Old Town is a maze of white cube houses that feels closer to the Cyclades than the north.

  • Craft You Won't Find Elsewhere

Skyros is famous for its craftsmanship: hand-carved wooden furniture, distinctive ceramics and traditional interiors passed down through generations. Its workshops are still working ones.

  • Beaches Few Ever Reach

Long stretches of quiet sand and coves where you may have the shore to yourself. This is the Sporades before the crowds, and largely without them.

Skyros sits apart from the rest of the Sporades, the southernmost of the islands and the most distinctive by far. That distance has kept it whole: while other islands have opened up to tourism, Skyros has held onto its own architecture, its own crafts and its own unhurried way of life. To arrive here is to step somewhere that still belongs entirely to itself.

The heart of the island is its Old Town, a maze of whitewashed cube houses climbing a hillside beneath a Byzantine castle, closer in feel to the Cyclades than to the green north of the Sporades. Behind the doors, traditional Skyrian homes are furnished with hand-carved wood, ceramics and copper, an interior style so particular it has become part of the island's identity. The workshops that make them are still working ones.

Beyond the town, Skyros is a landscape of two halves: gentle, green and cultivated in the north, wild and rocky in the south, where the island's small native horses still roam. Between them lie long, quiet beaches and coves where, more often than not, you will share the sand with no one at all.

With our local guides and captains, the island reveals itself at its own pace: a morning among the craftsmen of the Old Town, an afternoon on a beach reached by a winding road or a boat, a table where the recipes have not changed in generations. You arrive, and the most authentic corner of the Sporades is arranged around you.

Good To Know

Food

Skyros keeps its own table, with lobster pasta a local speciality, alongside island cheese, honey and the day's catch. Meals are shared family style, slow and generous, which makes the island a relaxed choice for groups and selective eaters alike.

Weather & Getting Around

July and August are hot; May, June and September bring warm days and quiet beaches. Skyros has a small airport with seasonal domestic flights, and ferries connect from the mainland at Kymi. The island's best beaches are spread out, some down winding roads or reached by boat, so a driver on hand or a day on the water opens up far more than a hire car alone.
