Overview

A small, steep island that the modern world largely passed by, and is better for it. Its Chora, one of the most beautiful villages in Greece, sits on the lip of a two hundred metre cliff, its life gathered in three shaded squares. Below, beaches wait at the end of footpaths and boat routes, and above, the white church of the Panagia watches over it all.

Folegandros cliffs and clear water
  • A Chora on the Cliff Edge

Folegandros town balances on the rim of a sheer cliff above the sea, a knot of whitewashed lanes, a medieval Kastro quarter and squares where the whole island gathers at dusk.

  • The Walk to the Panagia

A zigzag marble path climbs from the Chora to the church of the Panagia, the island's guardian. Time it for sunset and the view over the village and the open Aegean is unforgettable.

  • Beaches Earned, Not Given

Katergo, Agali and Agios Nikolaos are reached on foot or by small boat, which is precisely why they stay so clear and so quiet. Arriving by sea, swimming ashore for lunch, is the Folegandros way.

Folegandros is the island people mention quietly, half hoping it stays a secret. There is no airport, no big hotel and no schedule beyond the ferry timetable. What there is: a cliff top village of rare beauty, water of astonishing clarity and the sense, increasingly precious in the Aegean, of an island still living its own life.

Everything centres on the Chora. Built back from a sheer drop to the sea, it folds around the thirteenth century Kastro, where houses double as fortress walls, and opens into a string of small squares under pepper trees. Evenings here follow an old rhythm: a slow dinner outdoors, a walk between the squares, conversation carrying on late under the lamps.

The island's beaches ask a little of you and repay it doubly. Katergo, many say the finest in the Cyclades, is reached by footpath or boat; Agali sits below the Chora in a deep bay; further coves have no road at all. A day with a local boatman, swimming off pale pebbles in water like glass, shows why nobody here is in any hurry to build a bigger port.

With our local team, Folegandros stays effortless as well as pure: rooms on the caldera like cliff with the view you came for, a boat arranged for the beaches worth reaching and the tavernas where the cooking matches the setting. You arrive, and the quiet takes over.

Good To Know

Food

Folegandros cooks the old way: matsata, the island's hand rolled pasta with rooster or rabbit, local cheeses, honey and whatever the boats brought in. Tavernas are small and family run, spread between the Chora squares and the beach at Agali, and dinner is never rushed.

Weather & Getting Around

June and September are perfect, warm and calm with the island at its quietest; July and August stay gentler here than almost anywhere in the Cyclades. There is no airport, so arrival is by ferry, usually from Piraeus, Milos or Santorini. The island is small, buses link the port, Chora and Agali, and the best beaches are reached on foot or by boat, which we arrange for you.
